This lecture explores the impact of African American and African performance on the development of avant-garde artistic practices in both Western and Eastern Europe. It looks at the increasingly globalised popular culture of the first decades of the twentieth century, from the success of Josephine Baker and the compelling rhythms of jazz to lesser-known performance histories. Through an exploration of dance, music, and the visual arts, the lecture examines the fine line between cultural exchange and appropriation, showing how Black performers fostered new modes of creativity and experimentation that contributed to the avant-gardes’ reinvention of artistic forms. This lecture is held in English.
